Melbourne Deepcast 045: Agnès by Melbourne Deepcast
Agnès is a name we’ve been following for many years now so we’re pretty darn happy to add him to our list of podcasters. His depth and signature groove never cease to sooth the soul and move the body, for which this mix is tantamount to. Responsible for pseudonyms like Cavalier and Ray Valioso and labels like Sthlmaudio and the amazing Slowhouse series, Agnès was kind enough to chat with us about these projects and the labels he has worked with in the past…
You’ve been making music under a few different names in the past few years, can you tell us about them? What’s the story behind Agnès?
Haha yeah it’s a recurring question indeed; in fact all those names I’m using are indeed just ideas that comes through my stupid mind.I just really like names… I think a single name express already a lot of things and whenever I’m coming up with a new one that suite’s me well, I can’t help but use it. Check out Torpedoman =)
What about Ray Valioso or Cavalier?
Well, I also really like to sign things where I’m doing them, so for each labels I’m newly working with as a producer I’m always trying to push a new name in the game. Like Cavalier is me on Drumpeot as Ray Valioso is me on Real Soon Records its plain simple. It’s for me a way of showing my respect to the peoples that believe in my music.
You just put out the Cavalier album on Drum Poet, how did that come about? Can you tell us a little about the process behind making the album?
Yeah, it’s a funny story in fact, Alex & Ron my good friends from Drumpoet asked me to do a 2nd Cavalier EP maybe. So I’ve send them some
unreleased stuff of mine and well way too much for an EP maybe. So they came up with the idea of releasing an LP and I thought about it and said
yeah, cool why not in fact… You know I’m always so surprised that people actually like the stuff I’m doing, so it’s for me a real pleasure when
folks like Ron & Alex put their guts on the table to release a full length filled with my music. I feel their respect on my materials and therefore
feel just great releasing my music with peoples that believe in it & it’s one of the most important thing for me. Also another funny thing about it is that the
whole LP productions are spanning from 2007 till 2011, which correspond to the period I’ve decided to release less things but still did a shit load of’em.
Is there any reason why you went with Drum Poet for the album and not Sthlmaudio?
Actually for the reasons I’ve explained above and on top of that, I’ve just met the folks behind the Drumpoet promotion machinery, Thomas & Micheal from Compost in Munich, and they are so much into the thing they do that it’s almost surreal for me… I’m blessed really…
How did Sthlmaudio come about and what’s planned for the label?
Sthlmaudio really came along because I didn’t felt that the local labels in Geneva at the time even had listened to the music I gave them, so I thought that I’ll probably be better served by myself indeed. Basically it’s a very small thing, I’m really releasing things I love, my friends and also I keep on going with newcomers, I really want to help newcomers from which the music is talking to me to be present in the scene. I’m really proud of peoples like Baaz, Azuni, Sai which almost all have their 1st releases on my own small label, I’m just proud of that.
Do you have any plans to revisit the Slowhouse projects? Perhaps you can shed a little light on that label, because after three amazing records, it disappeared!
Sometimes things are like they are for good reasons, on that one I think it’s perfect the way it is.
Finally, can you tell us about this mix?
I’ve recorded it on a Monday morning using two 1210MK5 and time code control vinyls controlling Traktor Scratch Pro 2.0.3 on an HP ProBook 5320. The secret behind the mixes is very simple; it’s called Vestax PMC-25, have a check on the internet, it’s an old school mixer with 3 bands isolators per channels. It looks really awkward but dude, that beast when you tweak the knobs you fully understand why it’s been build; for House Dj’s. I which Vestax would do a 2012 version of it, I’m lacking a few things, like CUE without the isolators positions; which would let you mix without even cutting the channel faders and well a few other things but for the price I’ve got it I really can’t complain. What’s amazing about that mixer is that the isolators are really isolating everything out; bass, mid, highs.. It’s just groove wonderland…
I’ve recorded the set pretty low on volume on my main DAW trough a simple audio application, straight in a 16bits stereo WAV file.
Onto which I’ve later applied some digital wizardry of mine in order to get that loud and balanced. Last, I just wanted to point out that I’m giving a track list here, every DJ’s making a podcast available on the internet have, in my point of view, to give a track list. It’s just respecting the artists…
