Since releasing his first 12″ back in 2005, UK based producer Mark Evetts aka Mark E has been a name synonymous with quality. As one of the first modern-day artists to make a name for himself producing slow-house and disco edits, he’s widely regarded as one of the people responsible for the rise to popularity of what has now become a genre in itself. His signature deep and hypnotic productions aren’t his only card though, he’s also an outstanding selector of records. With a known passion for collecting vintage house music, his DJ sets are a nostalgic journey into the deepest depths of house, and this one is no different.

With his hotly anticipated (and seriously awesome) debut album Stone Breaker set to drop next month on Spectral Sound, and a handful of shows to play here in Australia this week, he’s definitely the man of the moment and one to keep a close set of ears on.

You’re known for a rather large output, in terms of originals, remixes and now even an album on top, but you’ve never compromised on quality, and manage to cross a number of styles, you must have a pretty efficient studio process?

Well thats very nice of you to say so. I think ever since I made the leap of faith from a 9 – 5 to trying music as my full time job its made me more effiicietn in the production process.
Like everything the more you do it the better you get. So instead of grabbing an hour here or there, im now having full days at a time to get stuck into it.

You’ve said to not have any formal musical training, yet your tracks evoke copious amounts of emotion and feeling. Do you feel that side of it is something that’s come more naturally, or something you have worked hard at mastering?

Its not something I have consciously worked on, I guess it comes naturally.

With your new focus on mainly original works, are there some completely new directions you’re hoping to explore? Or is it more just a case of wanting to create entirely your own music?

Yeah I feel both my production sound has matured alot over the last year, as has what im buying and playing. I find im buying older house music and making faster techno style tracks.
I would really love to push that sound more, but ultimately I want to make music that lasts the tests of time, and doesnt just sit within a genre for a year or two and then gets forgotten about.

With that in mind, can we be expecting a Mark E live set anytime soon?

No way, i could never see how that could translate into anything live, PLus I love djing too much.

With the new album Stone Breaker about to be released, how’s the feedback been so far? Is positive feedback from your peers something that’s important for you before a big release?

Yeah I couldnt really be happier with the feedback, everyone has been very positive.
It is nice to have my peers approval but its not an important thing im looking to achieve, Im just trying to make good quality honest music, if people like it and buy then I will carry on doing it.

You’re known for having played a few amazing boat parties in your time, it seems like you’re a bit of a specialist.. something in the water maybe? ;) What’s been your favourite party at sea thus far?

HAHA a specialist I think ive done 3 now, 2 in croatia and 1 in sydney. Obviously sydney was incredible, going under sydney harbour bridge with the sunshining, that was really special. But so were the croatian boat parties, I think playing with Gilles Peterson on the leftfoot boat had to be an obvious highlight, boat full of people going mad to crystal waters, although I still cringe to this day after I lifted the wrong needle up on his first track coming on after me. ouch!

Finally, can you tell us a bit about the mix?

An hour long selection of whats doing it for me right now, heavy on the retro house sounds going into tecnho territories later on. deep.
